The Lord Will Lighten Your Load By Pastor Steven Furtick At Elevation Church
Even When It Feels Too Heavy
In Genesis 45:25 through 46:5, we find a powerful moment in the story of Jacob. After years of grief, confusion, and emotional weight, Jacob hears that his son Joseph—long presumed dead—is not only alive but thriving. More than that, Joseph is ready to provide for him during a time of famine. But before Jacob can experience this joy, there’s a process. He must believe again. He must move. And he must trust that God will lighten the load he’s been carrying for so long.
This passage reminds us that the Lord does not leave us to carry our burdens alone. Even when we’re stubborn. Even when we refuse to ask for help. Even when we feel like we’ve been carrying too much for too long. The truth remains: God is faithful, and He will lighten the load.
When Hope Feels Distant
Sometimes, the weight we carry is emotional. Like Jacob, we may have suffered deep loss, betrayal, or confusion. It’s hard to keep hoping when you’ve been wounded. Hurt can drain hope from the soul, leaving us too tired to even ask for relief. But Jacob’s story shows that God has not forgotten us. He still has a plan, even if our hearts are too weary to dream again.
Don’t Overburden the Process
There are also moments when the weight we carry is spiritual. We try to plan every step, control every outcome, and shoulder the pressure of figuring everything out. But the sermon reminds us: don’t overburden the process by over-planning the path. When you get there—wherever “there” is—God’s already got you. He’s already made provision. He just asks that you keep moving forward, even if it’s slow, even if it’s heavy.
Blessings Can Be Heavy Too
The message also speaks to the idea that blessings themselves can feel heavy. We often think that happiness and heaviness can’t coexist. But in reality, they often sit at the same table. Waiting until everything feels perfect before accepting joy is a trap. Sometimes, the very thing you’ve prayed for can also come with responsibility, emotion, and discomfort. Yet even in that, God is present.
Let Go of What Wasn’t Yours to Carry
It’s also worth considering that not every burden we carry was meant for us. Some weights are not assignments—they’re distractions. They might be rooted in sin, fear, people-pleasing, or guilt. The enemy would love nothing more than to fill your mind with what doesn’t matter and overload your spirit with unnecessary pressure. But the good news is this: God can’t help you carry what He never called you to, but He will always help you carry what is yours to carry.
Trust the One Who Carries You
There is strength in admitting you need help. There is power in letting go. And there is peace in knowing that God is not just beside you—He is carrying you.
This week, ask yourself: what are you carrying that you don’t have to? What has become heavy that used to feel light? And where have you stopped trusting God to show up?
Just like Jacob had to take a step toward Egypt to see the fulfillment of God’s promise, you may also need to move in faith. The path may be unfamiliar, but the promise is secure. The load may feel too much, but the Lord will lighten it. He always does.
Let this be your reminder: you’re not alone, and you never were.
God will lighten your load. All you need to do is trust Him to carry what you can’t.
